    New Pickleball Courts
    The Chelsea Community Center has added three pickleball courts, set up in the gymnasium. According to the U.S. Pickleball Association, 4.2 million Americans were playing pickleball in 2020. This has become a hugely popular sport and many fitness centers and country clubs are building courts to meet the demand. People of all age groups come to play pickleball at Chelsea Community Center and each game typically takes about 25 minutes.

    Old Baker Farms opened the Pumpkin Patch marking the 22nd year of the farm being opened to the public. This is an owner-operated farm and the original family moved to the location in 1899. The farm is located at 184 Furrow Lane in Harpersville, AL. The Pumpkin Patch will be opened until Oct 31. Ages two and younger are free admissions.

    The Community Center in Chelsea will be adding a multi-million recreational park to include a splash pad and archery park. This new park will be shared by Chelsea and Shelby County and will cost around $3.2 million. The project will take two to three years to complete. A wading pool, multipurpose athletic field, playground and amphitheater are also being considered.

    Chelsea now has their own radio station. KOOL 96.9 FM is now broadcasting and playing a broad range of music, from the 50s all the way up to current hits today. The station was started by two local men who just happen to be brother-in-laws. Their coverage area includes Chelsea to the Summit, which includes 180,000 to 200,000 people.

  • Some friends called and asked if I wanted to meet them at Don PePe's for a meal. I had heard mixed reviews and having lived in Texas for a number of years I'm very particular. Well, I can say it was great. I had the Steak Quesadilla and it was cooked to perfection. The perfect combination of spices and heat. The atmosphere and conversation were great as well. So if your'e in the area, give Don PePe's a try.
  • The Chelsea City Council has approved borrowing an additional $2 million to fund capital projects.

    One of these projects is for the completion of the Chelsea sports complex. This new facility, once complete, will allow the city to attract various sports tournaments to the area. This will increase the sales tax income as the attendees will spend money in the area.

    The South Shelby Chamber is holding a scholarship fundraiser on April 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event Is called Boots and Bow Ties and will be held at Douglas Manor, 571 Chelsea Springs Rd, Columbiana, Al 35051. Tickets are selling for $10 and guests will enjoy a live and silent auction. Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding seniors in local schools.
