Leeds Area Insight

  • You may not be old enough to remember drive-in movie theaters, but they were a fun part of my childhood. I am "so" excited about the new Coyote Drive-In at The Shops of Grand River in Leeds! This new venue is nothing like the old theaters I remember. There are four giant screens, a mini-golf course, a restaurant and bar, even a stage for live music. It's adjacent to the shopping mall too so there's plenty to see and do.

One of the things to know when you go is they only sell double feature packages, but it's only $8 for an adult ticket so that's a good deal for two movies. Children ages 5-11 get in for $5 and under five are free. You can even bring your dog...they have grassy areas where you can walk them before the show and during intermission between the movies.

It's recommended you arrive early to get the best spot, and with so much to do and the nearby shopping that's not a problem. Even if you don't get one of the best spots, you won't have any problem seeing as the screens are really big and the rows are on berms so the car in front won't block your view. I can't wait to go! Ahhh...summertime!
  • Leeds is home to Barber Motor Sports, Bass Pro Shop and The Shops at Grand River, a new outlet mall. Leeds is growing by leaps and bounds. Located along Interstate 20 it has great access and a wide range of housing options to choose from. It also has a new high school. Leeds has small town feel and is expanding. Come take a look for yourself!
  • As a fairly recent arrival to the festival circuit of Birmingham, the Leeds Folk Festival has proven it's popularity over the past several years. The Festival is typically held on the third weekend of September in Downtown Leeds and includes area artisans, local musicians, farmer's market and a play commemorating John Henry. The Leeds Folk Festival is just one of several events held annually in the eastern suburbs of Birmingham which draws people from throughout the area.
  • A great location (although not as busy as others) for train spotting in Birmingham is the Leeds Depot. The Depot is located on what is now the Norfolk-Southern Mainline through Alabama. The building was fully restored in 1984 to much of its former glory and is now a regular event space for the City of Leeds.

A fully restored Southern Railways caboose is also located on the grounds adjacent to the Depot. The Depot features a collection of railroad memorabilia from the Southern Railways and also the former Birmingham Terminal Station.
  • As the story goes, ATROX Factory is an abandoned factory located on the edge of town... It's also the location of the annual haunted house that has been recognized nationwide as one of the best in the country. ATROX Factory is more than just a haunted house however, it's a charity that annually raises thousands of dollars for local organizations and charities.

The attraction regularly draws thousands of people every weekend in October and is one of the most popular in the South. The haunt features over a 1/4 mile maze through 40,000 sq. ft. of terror. Even their tagline is just simply scary, "You don't have to run fast to get out alive; just faster than your friends!"

Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines! Barbers Motorsports Park is a 740 acre multi use race facility located in Leeds that is home to some of the country's most prestigious and exciting races series. If you like Super Bikes, Formula 1, or Indy Cars, this is the place for you! With the design of the track, these is plenty of green space so you can stake your own claim during the race on whichever turn you like the most. And, with its open setting, often times you can get up close and personal with the drivers. This beautiful track has amazing art installations which feature giant ants and spiders taking away would be bike racers into their nests.

But the fun doesn't happen only on race days! Barbers is also home to an expansive Museum of Racing, full of bikes and other memorabilia, as well as The Porsche Driving School where you can drive on this track in a high powered sports car. Even if you are not a big fan of racing, it's quite an experience!

Leeds is located east of Birmingham and in the counties of Jefferson, St. Clair, as well as Shelby, AL. As of the 2010 census, its population was almost 12,000 people. Leeds recently broke away from the Jefferson County school system and formed their own school system. The area is poised for a population boom with the opening of the Barber Motorsports Park & Museum, the world's largest Bass Pro Shop (opened in 2008), and the upscale Outlets of Grand River which initially opened in 2010 and continues to add new stores.
