Athens is a wonderful place to visit or call home. This community, located in Limestone County, Alabama is getting a lot of attention from today's home buyers, and for many of good reasons. The city is home to about 25,000 people and the surrounding Limestone County has about another 75,000 and is the county seat. Limestone County is one of the top three fastest growing county's in the state. It is also an important part of the Huntsville and Decatur Combined Statistical Area. Living here means you really do have access to one of the largest and fastest growing economies in the region, which provides residents with access to area jobs and the ability to raise a family without a long commute into work each day.

What a gem! Athens is located approximately 90 minutes south of Nashville and 90 minutes north of Birmingham. Rich in agriculture and technology, Athens offers something for everyone. Huntsville, the Space Capital of the World, is only a short 30 minute drive from downtown Athens. Experience the "laid back" atmosphere that we enjoy here year round. If your hobbies include fishing, hunting, antique cars, golfing, bluegrass music or just something as simple as shopping for collectibles, you will absolutely love it here.

Growing up here in Athens, I have seen this area blossom within the last decade to a wonderful place that I am blessed to call my home. The Robert Beaty Historic District offers a peek into the past with homes dating back to the 1800's. Take a stroll through this community and view the lovely architecture of days gone by or visit our lovely Limestone County Court House which was built in 1887. It still houses courtrooms as well as provides offices for legal business on a daily basis.

Limestone County is bordered on the west by the Elk River and on the south by the Tennessee River which provides for many days of fun filled river activities to include boating and fishing. The first weekend in October for the past 50+ years, the crisp fall air is filled with the sounds from the famous Tennessee Valley Fiddlers Convention. Thousands of participants as well as just onlookers enjoy this event which features crafts as well as a variety of food trucks and good ole' Southern cooking. There is so much to see and do here in Athens, one must come and experience it themselves to appreciate this unique and wonderful place.
  • Athens is located in North Alabama and only minutes from the Space Capitol of the World. Enjoy the laid back lifestyle that we have to offer you here. From cotton fields to top notch technology, we have it all. Having been born here in Athens and being a true "Athenian", I have seen tremendous development, but at the same time, so much of the past has been preserved. Interstate 65 is accessible in about five minutes from the beautiful and historic Courthouse and downtown area. How's that for convenience! Drive north for 90 minutes and you are in Music City: Nashville! Or drive 90 minutes south and you are in Birmingham. Continue for another four hours and see one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. Come check us out!

Today is a wonderful day in Athens. The sun is bright, grass is turning that beautiful shade of green, daffodils are blooming, tulip trees are blooming and spring is here!

Nicholas Davis, the original framer of the Constitution of Alabama, settled at his own "Walnut Grove" which is located on Nick Davis Road across from the now Limestone Correctional Facility. He was born in Virginia, moved to Kentucky, served as a U.S. Marshall and later fought in the War of 1812 before moving here to settle in and live as a country gentleman. He spent his days entertaining guest and racing his horses. He was twice a candidate for Governor of Alabama and served as President of the Alabama Senate for five terms. He died September 29th, 1856 and is buried on his home site "Walnut Grove". When visiting Athens, Alabama you will find it has a lot of history and is a great place to explore.
  • Athens State is a great place to continue your education. A beautiful campus that hosts many events throughout the year, including the Old Time Fiddlers Convention each October. The Founders Hall is a beautiful facility for weddings or receptions.
  • Many people have never enjoyed a tomato sandwich from the South. There is no better place to get a big juicy ripe tomato in the right season than from Isom's Peach Stand. Isom's is located on US Highway 72 on the east side of Athens. The fourth generation now operates the business that was opened in 1957. Whether it is peaches, watermelons, other fruits or vegetables, Isom's is the place. Now, back to the tomato sandwich: Slice up a tomato (make sure that each slice is a minimum of half inch). Spread an ample supply of mayonnaise on two slices of bread. Lay the biggest slice of tomato on one piece of the bread and add salt and pepper to taste. Cover the tomato slice with the other piece of bread. You are now ready to enjoy a Southern summertime favorite.
  • We always see old acquaintances and make new friends each year at The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention. It is held the first full weekend of each October. Folks from hundreds of miles around converge upon the campus of Athens State University to observe and compete in this half century old tradition. The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention is a golden opportunity to enjoy music with roots anchored deep in the Appalachians. Harmonica, mandolin, Bluegrass banjo, dulcimer, dobro, old time singing, guitar and even buck dancing are in competition to earn a year's worth of bragging rights.
The music, original Tennessee Valley arts and crafts, and the best Southern style eats make The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention a must do for thousands of locals and visitors each year.
  • My family have been residents of Athens for over 100 years. I grew up in Athens and attended the Athens City Schools. Athens is a great place to live and raise a family. Lots of opportunities! I love it!!!
