Most people over the age of 50 years have at least heard of Phenix City. At one time it was not well thought of throughout the state of Alabama, but today Phenix City is a thriving small town located on the Alabama-Georgia border across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Georgia and Ft. Benning, Georgia. Many residents in and around the outlying communities such as Smiths Station and Ft. Mitchell are in some way tied to Ft. Benning, which used to be known as the "Home Of The Infantry"; today it is known as the "Army's Maneuver Center" after the base realignment a few years back when the Armor School moved from Ft. Knox, Kentucky to Ft. Benning.

One of the most exciting adventures in Phenix City/Columbus is the Urban White Water Rafting and Blue Heron Zipline that allows one to zipline across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus to Phenix City (see attached video link). These attractions are drawing tourists from all around the southeast to experience a white water/zipline adventure and then take a short walk for lunch or dinner in one of the many restaurant locations nearby.
