    The City Of Birmingham offers many great activities for people of all ages. A great Christmas tradition is the showing of Christmas movies at the Alabama Theater. The Alabama Theater is known as "The Showplace of The South" and first opened in 1927. The entire theater has been restored to its original charm and attending any event is like taking a step back in time. Consider an outing at this great theater and definitely try to take in a Christmas movie to put yourself in the spirit!

  • Seven suburbs of the Birmingham metro area made it into the Top 20 of the Safest Cities in Alabama. A home security and safety site called SafeWise released its rankings of the Safest Cities in Alabama using the most recent FBI Crime Report stats from 2014. The report uses statistics for property and violent crime, in addition to the population data, producing a per-capita crime rating. The following Birmingham suburbs made it to the list: Alabaster, Argo, Brent, Helena, Odenville, Pelham, and Vestavia Hills.
  • The PGA Champions tour will be playing a golf tournament at the Greystone Golf and Country Club this weekend! Play begins this Thursday and goes through Sunday. The Champions tour is the PGAs senior golf tour (ages 50+). The golf is still remarkable and the course at Greystone is immaculate. A few big name players such as Bernhard Langer and John Daly will be in the playing field! Make sure to get your tickets now and do not miss any of the excitement!!
  • I have passed this beautiful park time after time. I stopped today and walked to see what I would encounter. A mom had her children down at the water letting them play in the water. Another couple said they walk at the park everyday with their new dog. It is an easy path and very open. I liked being in the shade most of the time. It made me want to return with my pets.
  • Regency Summit Condominiums is visible from downtown and I-65 while driving south toward The Club on top of Red Mountain. The condo is very well managed by the board. The amenities consist of workout room, sauna and steam room, big party hall, extra storage, assigned parking plus ample parking for guests, and 24 hours security.
  • Tuesday Night Seafood Buffet is the Forest Gump of Buffets. So many tasty treats it is hard not to try them all They are known for their Orange Rolls and it is hard not to eat just one. They do their best to make each customer feel pampered and leave wanting to return ASAP.
  • Red Mountain Park covers 1500 acres of land along the Red Mountain Ridge in Central Alabama. It consists of over 14 miles of trails, three tree houses, six acres of leash off at Remy's Dog Park, Red Ore Zip Tour and Kaul Adventure Tower. Hours are from 7 a.m to 7 p.m.

    Pepper Place Market is located on 2nd Avenue South and open Saturdays from April thru December. You will find lots of food, entertainment and unique vendors at this South side venue. The Farmers Market is a big draw to the site. Just another great activity offered in Birmingham.

  • Four blocks of green space in downtown Birmingham linking two of the cities unique "must sees"! On one end there is Railroad Park with its view of the city and a skate park and playground. On the other end of the trail there is a connection to the Jones Valley Trail which follows a former railroad corridor. No one would expect to see so much green space in the Birmingham city limits.

  • Birmingham, AL made the list! Ranked fourth on Lonely Planet's list of "Our Most Unexpectedly Exciting Places to See in the United States in 2016". What did Lonely Planet find interesting about the area? Let's name a few reasons. Birmingham sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and offers many activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Biking and hiking trails in both a woodsy setting as well as in the urban areas. If you love to eat then Birmingham is a place to visit. Many fabulous restaurants representing various cultures offering unique cuisines! And last but not least, Birmingham has a very long interesting history.     McWane Science Center
    Located on 19th Street North in downtown Birmingham, the McWane Science Center is a favorite place to explore, learn, and play for kids of all ages. My son loves the hands-on experience every time we visit. The Shark and Ray Touch Tank is his favorite part. You can pet live Bonnethead and White Spotted Bamboo sharks and Southern and Cownose stingrays as they swim by. Another big hit is the gigantic slide that stretches from the third level to the second level.

    This Saturday, February 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. is "Big Machines Day" at the center. Sponsored by Craneworks, children will be delighted by real life size backhoes, excavators, dumptrucks, loaders, and dozers. The McWane Science Center is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sundays from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.. Admission prices are listed on their website.

    I was driving home one day on Hwy 280 and saw a sign about a new Laser Combat Center opening, a fun place for all ages... We just so happened to be looking for a venue for my grandson's birthday party and after visiting the 9000 square foot arena decided to go there. What a great place, the staff was friendly and helpful and the kids had a great time. Put this on your list when visiting Birmingham...
  • Birmingham, Alabama's Lyric Theater is over a century old but on its 102nd birthday it reopened with all the beauty and glory of 1914. The reopening featured three vaudeville shows which it was famous for in the early 1900s. The theater will have a concert with many well known performers.

  • The Thomas Jefferson Tower has a roof top "Zeppelin Mooring Mast". Built in 1926, a time when travel by dirigible was considered to be the next greatest means to travel. Birmingham like many other cities around the world built docking stations. The Thomas Jefferson Tower was a perfect location -- across the street from the train station. With lack of use nor need it had deteriorated. The docking station has not been repaired to look like it was originally. As a symbol of Birmingham's history it was decided to "Light it Up". The LED lighting system will have the ability to change colors. An old icon shall be a new symbol high up on the City of Birmingham's skyline.

    Thunder on The Mountain
    No questions asked; this is where a Birmingham resident wants to spend the 4th of July. Well, at least the evening part of it. Day can be spent at a cook-out, or the river or lake, or any number of fun locales. But around 7- 8 p.m. it's time to stake out your spot for Thunder on the Mountain. My short video doesn't even serve this fireworks show justice. Thunder on the Mountain takes place at the foot of Vulcan on Red Mountain and can be seen pretty much anywhere you can see the Vulcan sclpture. That's lots of places, but some of the best spots are Regions Field, Railroad Park and The Club, although people do watch this show from overpasses and TV stations and all kinds of unlikely places. Just bring your comfy things like drinks, snacks and blankets and turn your car radio to one of the local stations that plays the soundtrack. If you've got those things and a good view, you're set.

  • A 17,000 square foot furnishing store opened in the Lee Branch Shopping Center. The store features new furniture and customized pieces. One of the unique pieces is a tree, cut in half lengthwise and hollowed out. They like to take old things and make them new. Every time you visit Urban Home Market you will find different stuff. The business is owned by Kathy McMahon and her two daughters.

  • I'm old enough to remember when it took forever to get from Mountain Brook Village to Downtown Birmingham, before the Red Mountain Cut was made and the Red Mountain Expressway was built. My family lived nearby and I can remember going to the site and hunting for fossils. I'm not sure when this was exactly (maybe I was 9 or 10), but contractors broke ground on The Cut in February 1963 and the Red Mountain Expressway opened in 1970, so our fossil hunting expeditions took place sometime after they made serious progress cutting through the mountain. That quarter-mile slice into Red Mountain revealed what represents a 440 million year geological time span. 440 million years is really, really old!
